UpRooted: Deconstructing our Colonial Faith
Wednesday Programs: 6:30 7:30 pm on Wednesdays
“UpRooted: Deconstructing our Colonial Faith.” With speakers to help us consider how the church, scripture, and ambition has caused harm to indigenous communities all around the world in the name of Jesus. We will hear voices speak to reparations, early church practices in the Americas, and the Wesleyan narrative of colonization. This will be a challenging series with opportunities for self-reflection, lament, repentance, and inspiration.
Sunday Worship Info
Don't miss, a special guest preacher on November 17 – Matthew 28: 18-20 – UpRooting Colonial Tendencies in America, Preacher Pastor Malachi from North UMC in Minneapolis.
We began the year rooted in the story of Israel, who compared to an oak tree, reduced to a stump, and then brought back to life with a new branch shooting up from the stumps. Listening to the story of the trees of the Bible, we are rooted in our calling to live into and work for God’s vision wholeness for all of creation.
And now being rooted, there are things that we must uproot. Just like a gardener tends to the weeds around fruit bearing plants, we must uproot the stories, theologies, and practices of our tradition and history that have not brought fruit, but destruction. Specifically, we will be looking at the scriptures that have been misused to oppress, marginalize, and colonize throughout history. By increasing our awareness and understanding of practices that have been, and continue to be, harmful we can live into our Wesleyan call to first, “Do no harm.”
