Obituary
Southward, Bruce L. of St. Paul, passed away Sept. 19, 2024, peacefully surrounded by loved ones. He was born on February 24, 1938 in Minneapolis, MN to Bud and Marjorie Southward. He graduated from Osseo High School, received his bachelor's degree from Hamline University and master's degree from the University of Minnesota. He served in the U.S. Navy and was an officer candidate when medically discharged. He met Gladys Prosch and they were married June 22, 1963 in Osseo, MN. He became employed with the St. Paul Public Schools at Roosevelt Jr. High and then Humboldt Jr. High where he spent his entire teaching career that spanned 33 years. During that time, he was a middle school coach for various sports; being their wrestling coach was his passion. He also refereed swimming for the MN High School League for 50 years. After retiring from teaching, he embarked on a part time career as an EMT volunteering with the Red Cross. He was preceded in death by his parents, his brother, David and beloved wife, Gladys. He is survived by daughter, Lori Matson (Scott Kobasick) CO; son, Daniel Southward, MN; sisters, Jean Smith (John) and Carol Southward, MN; grandchildren, Dustin (Tawnee Henry) Southward, Morgan Matson, Paige Rudroff (Tyler), Tatyanna Southward, Taylor Southward; great grandchildren, Kingston Southward and Reese Rudroff; also nieces, nephews, friends and former students. A Remembrance service and Celebration of Life will be held at Fairmount Ave. United Methodist Church, 1523 Fairmount Ave., St. Paul on Sat., Oct. 19, 1pm. There will be a visitation one hour prior to service followed by a reception after the service. Interment will be at Ft. Snelling National Cemetery on Oct. 21 at 1pm.
